Dallas Model Photography: A Natural-Light Shoot With Veda

Dallas Fashion Model

When I moved to Dallas in 2005, I began photographing fashion and lifestyle models represented by the Kim Dawson Agency.

Those early model tests gave me an opportunity to experiment with lighting, styling, movement, and composition while working with experienced professional models. They were creative, fast-paced shoots—and an important part of developing my photography style.

Years later, I had the opportunity to photograph Veda, one of the models I had worked with previously, again.

Working With an Experienced Model

One of the things I’ve always appreciated about working with Veda is how naturally she moves in front of the camera.

Experienced models understand that posing isn’t simply about finding a position and holding it. Small changes in posture, expression, hands, shoulders, and body angle can create an entirely different photograph.

Veda’s ability to move fluidly gave us a lot of variety and allowed the session to develop naturally rather than relying on a series of predetermined poses.

Photographing With Natural Light

For this session, I kept the lighting simple.

The images were photographed using natural light with a silver reflector for fill.

A reflector allowed us to redirect some of the available light back toward Veda, helping control shadows without changing the natural quality of the light.

It’s a relatively simple setup, but with the right location, direction of light, and positioning of the model, simple lighting can produce beautiful results.

Model Tests as a Creative Collaboration

Model tests have always given me room to experiment.

Unlike agency digitals, which are intentionally straightforward and minimally styled, a model test can incorporate more creative decisions involving wardrobe, lighting, posing, movement, and expression.

They’re also collaborative. As the photographer, I’m watching the light, composition, and timing while providing direction. An experienced model brings an understanding of movement and how those movements translate through the camera.

That interaction is often what creates the strongest photographs.

Behind the Shoot

Hair and makeup for this session were provided by Rey Medrano of Beauty Dish Studios.

Krystel Pitts assisted during the shoot, and I handled the wardrobe styling and photography.

Model Photography in Dallas

I’ve photographed models in Dallas since moving here in 2005, working with both experienced professionals and people who are just beginning to build their portfolios.

Today, my model photography includes straightforward modeling digitals as well as more developed model tests and portfolio sessions.

For anyone interested in agency representation, I recommend checking each agency’s current submission requirements first. Some agencies initially want simple digitals rather than professionally styled portfolio photographs.
