Some photography assignments are even better when you get to work alongside another photographer—especially when that photographer happens to be your husband.
My husband, Rick Birt, and I have collaborated on a variety of photography projects over the years, from fashion and events to commercial lifestyle assignments and charitable work.
When I originally published this post, Rick had recently retired from the Marines and was joining me on more photography projects.
One of those assignments took us to One Arts Plaza in Dallas to photograph a fashion show for Prashe.
Photographing Fashion and Events Together
Rick and I had already worked together on fashion stories and events, as well as photography projects supporting organizations including Flashes of Hope and DIFFA.
We’ve also collaborated on lifestyle and event photography for corporate clients.
Working together allows us to photograph an assignment from different perspectives and capture moments happening simultaneously—something that’s especially useful during fast-moving events.
Prashe Fashion Show at One Arts Plaza
Fashion shows present a completely different challenge from a controlled portrait session.
There’s movement, rapidly changing expressions, lighting that you don’t necessarily control, and moments that happen only once.
The goal is to anticipate what’s coming and create strong photographs without interrupting what’s happening in front of you.
For this Prashe fashion show at One Arts Plaza in Dallas, Rick and I photographed the event and created a collection of images highlighting the designs, models, and atmosphere of the evening.
Experience Behind the Camera
When I originally wrote this post, I was celebrating 25 years as a professional photographer.
I’ve photographed a lot more assignments since then, but I like keeping posts like this because they’re part of the history of my business—and a reminder of the range of projects I’ve had the opportunity to photograph over the years.
Today, my work is focused primarily on corporate, commercial, executive, and personal branding photography, but the same ability to anticipate moments, work efficiently, and create photographs in changing environments continues to be important in the work I do for businesses and organizations.
